Tagum City— The Botika ng Bayan was officially opened to the public in this city after a memorandum of agreement (MOA) was signed last March 3 between the local government of Tagum represented by Mayor Allan L. Rellon, and the Department of Health (DOH) represented by Annabelle P. Yumang, the regional director of DOH-XI.
Located at the City Health Office of this city, this Botika ng Bayan, which is a project of the DOH which is aimed to ensure the Filipinos to have a better and easier access to medicines for free, is the very first Botika ng Bayan granted to an LGU here in Davao del Norte.
Included in the list of medicines which can be accessed for free from the ‘botika’, provided that Tagumenyos present a prescription from physicians, are medicines for hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, asthma, cough and colds, as well as multivitamins.
These medicines will be funded by the DOH during the first 3 years of operation, with the city government of Tagum allocating funds for it to sustain the program thereafter.
According to Mayor Rellon, Tagum is very lucky to have been chosen as the sole grantee for this year by the DOH which is conducting their evaluation and assessment of the established Botika ng Bayan across the country. He attributed this to the early request made by the LGU to be a recipient of the program to which the health department responded positively.
As per Dr. Yumang, Tagum was chosen to receive this project because it passed the criteria set by the DOH such as the structure where medicines can be stored, and most importantly, the city has a registered pharmacist.
City Councilor, Dr. Joel Padoran expressed his happiness and gratitude for the realization of this project for it is a step closer to the actualization of his platform on primary health care where Tagumenyos can avail medical services at their doorsteps.
This is a manifestation of the committed pursuit of the city government towards achieving a healthier citizenry as espoused in the EAGLE WINGS program. JP Cordovero/CIO Tagum
