In line with the vision and the mission of Tagum City as one of the prime movers of raising awareness towards a cancer-free city, the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (PSMO), in cooperation with the City Government of Tagum held the “TAGUMpay Laban sa Kanser” last April 25, 2018 the Audio Visual Room of the New City Hall of Tagum attended by barangay health workers from the city’s 23 barangays.
This event aims to educate the people regarding cancer and how to battle its fatal effect. It was divided into two sessions: the Holistic Oncology and the Breast Examination.
The PSMO officials, who organized the said program, are a mix of Medical Doctors who professionalized in Cancer medication or Oncologists from Luzon, Cebu, and Tagum headed by their President, Dr. Mary Claire Soliman andDr. Arnold John Uson, chairman of the committee on Outreach Program.
It was attended by 46 Barangay Health Workers (BHW) coming from the 23 barangays of the City of Tagum, of which some are cancer survivors.
For the Holistic Oncology, lectures on how to avoid and how to fight cancer through healthy living were given leading doctors from the PSMO. For the Breast Examination, the delegates were taught on how to detect if they have tumors on their breast which was facilitated by the rest of the team.
One of the founders of the Living Hope Cancer Survivor’s Club and a supporter of the PINK Tagum shared her success story in overcoming her breast cancer.
She was diagnosed last 2004 and it took her 9 and a half months for her 30 sessions of radiotherapy and 8 sessions of chemotherapy. After that, she underwent 5 years of hormone replacement therapy to renew her estrogen which was the cause of her cancer.
According to her, family support served as motivation and inspiration for her to defeat cancer. As of this year, she is cancer free for fourteen years already.
Her story was applauded by everyone and she was hailed as the epitome of determination, courage, and optimism. John Patrick Cordovero/ CIO Tagum
