Tagum City— The local government of Tagum (LGU) has joined the Philippine national government in its efforts to win over the threat brought back by the re-emergence of the vaccine-derived poliovirus when the LGU, in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH) XI, conducted the Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio on November 25, 2019 in the city.
Implemented thru the City Health Office, the activity which was launched at the City Hall atrium, was aimed at halting the transmission and eventually eradicating the virus in the city, the health workers of which are working on achieving a 95% target rate of coverage thereby uniting all 23 barangays in Tagum to attain the certified Polio-free status.
During the said launch, the vaccines were put inside a gift box and, depicted as a lifetime present, were given to the children to protect them from the fatally risky Polio virus.
For his part, Mayor Allan L. Rellon encouraged every Tagumenyo parents with children below 5 years old to cooperate in the campaign to secure the health of their children. He further said during the opening ceremony, that everyone must clean and sanitize their surroundings to avoid the proliferation of the virus.
According to Rae Katherine Apura, the City Health Education and Promotion Officer III, environmental sanitation and proper hygiene, including proper washing of hands before and after eating and after every toilet use, are the key things for people not to be infected with polio.
This Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio campaign will run until December 7 for its first round and the second round will commence on January 6 to 18. Parents only need to visit their respective Brgy. Health Centers to avail the vaccination on the said dates.
The holding of the activity was made in accordance to Memorandum Order No. 2019-178 issued by the Department of Interior and Local Government which encouraged all LGUs to cooperate and support the DOH’s campaign against Polio.
